Daniel values good tools for solving problems. He’s used software to build tools for anticipating and analyzing legal arguments. He reads books as tools to fill in knowledge gaps and learn quickly from authors who worked hard to develop their insight.

He also loves tools for DIY, crafting, and EDC, and as an extension of that heritage fashion. A good tool wants to be used to be of service. So, Daniel is often eager to lend a friend a book, or a knife, or recommend leather boots. He takes recommendations seriously, having written book reviews, so if he recommends a book or movie, trust the suggestion – he’s seen the bad to point you toward the great.

The material science of good clothes lets you work in inclement weather, trek through unfamiliar terrain, and keep a (fairly) stoic attitude, mindful of the adage “There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong outfit.” If you ask him about scouting or survivalism, he will start with an hour-long lecture on maintaining your comfort level in high-quality cotton and wool.

Daniel practices Brazilian jiu jitsu, a grappling martial art for gently forcing people into uncomfortable positions where they surrender or face serious injury and involves a lot of laundry.

He has two highly trained cats named Missy (“Misdemeanor”) and Fella (“Felony”).
